Patrick R. Grzanka, Director

Patrick R. Grzanka, Ph.D. is the founding director of the Social Action Research Team at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK). Grzanka is an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the counseling psychology program and a member of the steering committee of the interdisciplinary programs in American Studies and Women, Gender, and Sexuality. He was formerly an Honors Faculty Fellow in Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University and an affiliate faculty member of the Center for Biology & Society. He holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Maryland and a B.A. in Journalism from the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland.

SART’s research activities reflect Grzanka’s scholarly interests in interdisciplinary, social justice-focused research on contemporary social problems, particularly those at the intersections of race, gender and sexuality. Grzanka’s scholarship is broadly concerned with the interplay of emotions, attitudes, and identities at the nexus of intersecting inequalities. His first book, Intersectionality: A Foundations and Frontiers Reader, was published by Westview Press in 2014. Grzanka serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Counseling Psychology and The Counseling Psychologist, and his writing has appeared in leading journals including Archives of Sexual BehaviorSymbolic InteractionJournal of Counseling Psychology, American Journal of Bioethics: Neuroscience, American Journal of BioethicsSexuality Research and Social Policy, and SexualitiesAs an interdisciplinary scholar, he regularly presents research at the annual meetings of the American Psychological Association, American Sociological Association, American Studies Association, and the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S), among others. He also occasionally writes for the popular press and is frequently interviewed by reporters about contemporary social issues and popular culture.

At UTK, Grzanka regularly teaches the psychology of gender (undergraduate) and the social justice practicum (graduate) for counseling psychology doctoral students.
